BIOGRAPHY OF IMAM
SYAFI’I
ORIENTATION (INTRODUCTION)
The full name of
Imam Syafi’i is Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Idris asy-Syafi'i al-Muththalibi
al-Qurasyi. He is a famous scholar. Imam Syafi’i was born in Gaza, Palestine in 150 H/767 M. He belongs
to the family of the prophet Muhammad SAW because his genealogy met with the
grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. His father's name is Idris bin Abbas
and his mother's name is Fatimah binti Ubaidillah Al Azdiyah. His father died,
when he was in his mother's womb.
EVENTS
Imam Syafi'i loves
religious knowledge, he studied hard. When he was 7 years old, Imam Syafi'i had
memorized the Qur'an even with comments. Then, when he was 10 years old, he had
memorized the book of hadith, al-Muwatta 'by Imam Malik. In his youth, he was
very studious, even he went to several places to study.
Some of the places he visited to study, included:
1.
He has studied with the hudzail tribe.
The Hudzail tribe is an inland tribe, who is very fluent in Arabic. He
studied with the Hudzail tribe until he became an expert in Arabic. After
studying with the Hudzail tribe, Imam Syafi’i was nicknamed al-Imam fi
al-Lughah because he was very good at Arabic.
2.
He has studied in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
He studied fiqhi in Mecca with a famous scholar named Imam Muslim bin
Khalid az-Zanji. He studied until he became a Mufti.
3.
He has studied in Medina.
In Medina, he studied hadith with a famous scholar named Imam Malik
Bin Anas. He studied until he mastered Mazhab Maliki.
4.
He has studied in Iraq and Yemen.
In Iraq, he studied with a famous scholar named Imam Muhammad bin
al-Hasan asy- Syaibani. For several years, Imam Syafi'i has mastered Mazhab
hanafi. Then, he went to Yemen to study with Yahya bin Husain. At that time he
was appointed as secretary of state and also as a Mufti.

In Egypt
In Egypt, he taught his knowledge to students. He taught his students
to become famous scholars, such as : Imam al- Buwaiti, Imam al-Muzani , Imam
Rabi’ al-Muradi, Imam Rabi al-Jaizi, Imam Harmalah and Imam Nawawi.
REORIENTATION (CLOSING)
Imam Syafi'i was
very instrumental in the development of religious knowledge. His life is only
to study religion and worship Allah SWT. He wrote many books like : Ar-Risalah,
Al-Umm and Al-Hujjah. He also founded Mazhab Syafi’i. Imam Syafii died on Friday night in the month of Rajab 204 H/820 M
when he was 54 years old. He was buried in Egypt after the Asr prayer.
